Monomyth: What are flat characters in the Hero's Journey?
In this video Josh gives explains the difference between a flat arc, compared to positive and negative arcs.
The main take-aways are as follows:
1) Monomyth means the “one story." It's also known as the Hero's Journey (and loosly associated with the Fool's Journey). Elements of the monomyth can be found in nearly all forms of mythology and fairytales from around the world.
2) The Hero's Journey is comprised of a three act structure.
The three main phases (or acts, or stages, or major plot events--depending on what you're writing) are:
--Separation (or Departure)
--Initiation (or Trials/Tests)
--Return
Today we are analyzing character arcs. There are three possible arcs:
1. Positive = Hero denies their flaw and grows as a person. Star Wars is a good example of this.
2. Negative = Hero is consumed by their flaw and meets a tragic ending. Moby Dick is a good example of this.
3. Flat = Hero already holds an inner truth and does not change during the story. However, they bring the inner truth to society and the society either has a positive or negative arc. Usually this arc is portrayed through another character (sometimes a sidekick/ally/antagonist). Hunger Games is a good example.
