Monomyth: What is the Freedom to Live Stage in the Hero's Journey?
In this video Josh explains the importance of the "Freedom to Live" step in the Monomyth. On a basic level, the Hero’s Journey is broken into a three act structure. Within those acts, Joseph Campbell identified 17 specific stages. However, others, such as screenwriter Christopher Vogler, author of The Writer’s Journey, partition them even further into steps.
The three main acts are, Separation, Initiation, and Return. In the first act of Separation, the hero must leave his normal world behind by accepting the call to adventure, meeting helpers/mentors, and crossing the threshold into the special world. During the second act of Initiation, the hero must face the road of trials, approach the innermost cave, face death, and receive the ultimate boon. In the last act of the Return, the hero must go back to the normal world to share the boon with society. Normally this culminates to a final climax or battle, where the hero uses all that he’s learned along the journey to win the day.
In this video Josh explores the "Freedom to Live" step. This is essentially where all of the loose ends of the story are tied up, and there is a celebration. Many times we see the hero face old problems in the ordinary world, but this time they are able to overcome them with ease because of the lessons they've learned along the journey. It signifies tot he audience, that they are a new person. Their old flaws and weaknesses no longer hold them back from reaching their full potential.
